Thanksgiving Greetings from Draft Animal Power Network

November 2011 | www.draftanimalpowernetwork.org

Dear Jen,

Its logging season and draft animals are a great way to pull wood from the forest in a low impact way, whether it be firewood or timber harvest.

We are very lucky to have some great resources here in the Northeast for folks wanting to learn more.

EVENTS

Winter Logging Workshop in Athol, MA at The Farm School, December 10 and 11.  There will be teamsters with teams on arches and scoots as well as singles twitching logs.  I believe we will be building a scoot from scratch as well.  Food promises to be delicious and camping is available.  More info here.

The MOFGA Low Impact Forestry Course, an annual event, was held last weekend and was a huge success.  Matching experienced teamsters and teams of draft animals with students of varying experience over 4 days, each student was brought through a progression from draft horse care and harnessing to pulling wood from the woodlot and alot of information between the two.  Awesome opportunity to network, learn from a wonderful group of teachers and enjoy the best food on the planet. Put this event on your calendar for next year.  Its always the weekend before Thanksgiving.

From your DAPNet President...

Its the time of the year to look at our lives with gratitude.  Its easy to get caught up with all the difficulties that life offers us on a day to day basis, but without gratitude, we make no room for new opportunities and connections to the world we live in.

I want to thank the many, many wonderful people, be it students, farmers, or teamsters, I have had the opportunity to work with this year within the Draft Animal Power Network.  Its amazing to me, the diversity of experiences and amount of knowledge out there among our members (and those not yet members) in regard to draft animal power, sustainable forestry and farming.  I encourage you all to take full advantage of this wonderful network of people.  We are the future of the planet.
